Who we are

Founded on June 11, 1919, American Legion Post 36 was Broward County’s very first Legion post, proudly chartered in Fort Lauderdale. Now located on State Road 84, the post is named in honor of William C. Morris and has stood as a steadfast beacon of service for more than a century.
Our Mission & Community Impact
• A Safety Net in Crisis
During the historic flood a couple of years ago, Post 36 became a critical hub for relief and recovery. We opened our doors to shelter affected families, distributed food and water, and coordinated with local authorities to offer comfort and resources when the community needed it most. Our members volunteered tirelessly in rescue efforts, helping clear homes and streets, and ensuring that no neighbor was left behind.
• Honoring and Empowering Homeless Veterans
At the heart of our efforts lies our ongoing commitment to homeless veterans. Through partnerships with local shelters and VA programs, we provide essential care packages, meals, and referrals to housing and mental health resources. Our fundraising events—ranging from benefit dinners to bingo nights—raise vital funds to pay for temporary housing and wrap‑around support services. We ensure that those who served are not forgotten in their time of need.
• Serving Beyond Our Walls
Post 36 sponsors and participates in a wide array of community-driven initiatives:
• Veterans Day & Memorial Day Ceremonies on Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk.
• Riverwalk Memorial Brick installations, honoring fallen county soldiers.
• Support for youth civic programs like Boys and Girls State.
• Sponsorship of local events—including the St. Patrick’s Day Parade—and collaboration with groups like American Veterans for Equal Rights.
• Hosting food trucks, live entertainment, and public events right here at the post to foster fellowship across generations.
Why We Serve
Our vision extends beyond remembrance. We strive to:
• Preserve the legacy of those who served—through ceremonies, advocacy, and historical education.
• Strengthen community resilience—by stepping in with help and hope during crises.
• Cultivate belonging—creating a warm, open atmosphere where veterans, families, and neighbors connect.
• Serve with purpose—by tackling homelessness, poverty, and social isolation among veterans.
American Legion Post 36 Fort Lauderdale isn’t just a gathering place—it’s a source of stability, compassion, and civic pride. Grounded in more than 100 years of patriotic service, we’re dedicated to upholding American values, honoring veterans, and building a stronger, more supportive community for everyone.
