American Legion Boys State – Sponsored by Post 36
American Legion Boys State is one of the premier youth leadership and citizenship programs in the nation. Since 1935, the American Legion has proudly sponsored this week-long experience for high school juniors, giving them a unique opportunity to learn about government, leadership, and the responsibilities of citizenship — not from a textbook, but by living it.
What Is Boys State?
Each year, high school juniors from across Florida are selected to represent their schools and communities at Florida Boys State. These young men are divided into “cities” and “counties,” where they form political parties, run for office, campaign, and participate in elections.
From mayor to governor, sheriff to legislator, delegates hold offices at every level of government. They draft bills, debate laws, pass resolutions, and experience firsthand the process of democracy in action. Many programs also include a judicial system, law enforcement, and even media outlets — allowing participants to see how all branches of government work together.
Who Attends?
• Boys State is open to high school juniors (rising seniors) who demonstrate strong leadership, character, and academic achievement.
• Students are nominated by teachers, counselors, or community leaders.
• Sponsorship is provided by local American Legion Posts — such as Post 36 here in Fort Lauderdale — so there is no cost to the student.
Alongside Boys State, the American Legion Auxiliary hosts Girls State, offering the same opportunity to young women across Florida.
A Proven Tradition of Leadership
Boys State has produced generations of leaders, including:
• President Bill Clinton (Arkansas Boys State alumnus)
• Vice President Dick Cheney
• Astronaut Neil Armstrong
• Journalist Tom Brokaw
• And countless governors, senators, judges, and local officials
Closer to home, many Florida Boys State alumni have gone on to serve their communities with honor, including right here in the Fort Lauderdale area.
